What is Eriocaulon?
Family: Eriocaulaceae
Genus and Species: Eriocaulon buergerianum
Eriocaulon buergerianum or Gu Jing Cao is an annual herb growing in damp area in China. This particular species does not grow
wild in Korea, where Eriocaulon sieboldianum is used for herbal medicine instead. Eriocaulon species are commonly called pipeworts,
and either the entire plant or the capitulum is used. Acrid and sweet in taste, slightly warm in nature, it disperses "wind-heat",
brightens eyes, and eliminates superficial visual obstruction, which are attributable to liver and stomach channels.
Scientific research on Eriocaulon buergerianum has been so scarce that even very little is known about the chemical constituents of
this herb
except for some mineral contents. This plant was first recorded as a medicinal herb in Materia Medica of China in Kai Bao era.
-Therapeutic Actions:
Eriocaulon buergerianum has been known to improve visual acuity and remove nebula. Eriocaulon buergerianum is also used for red, swollen
eyes, eye pains, headache, and toothache.
-Usage:
Dose: About Daily dose of preparations from 6-15 grams of dried Eriocaulon buergerianum flower heads or the plant is recopmmended.
Side Effects: None known. Eriocaulon buergerianum is recommended against in case of blood deficiency.
